Recently Pittsburgh Today, one of the nation’s oldest regional indicators and journalistic reporters, reached out to us to create several wall murals depicting infographic designs. They called on our expertise to print and install their original designs for the walls of the Pittsburgh International Airport.
The photos in this article show the completed campaign, which displays Pittsburgh Today’s collected data in visually striking wall graphics. The project was comprised of eight vinyl graphics to embellish the walls within the terminal gates and the central shopping plaza of the airport. Spark Signs was able to establish a product for the client that helps promote the Pittsburgh region to those who don’t live in Pittsburgh, but are traveling in and out, and reinforce to those who live here, what a great city we live in!
Pittsburgh Today is a journalistic reporter that believes that in order for citizens to make the best possible decisions about the future of their region, they need a foundation of reliable information and a clear understanding of the issues affecting them. Pittsburgh Today provides that information through statistical data and comparisons for the people of Pittsburgh to determine where they need to grow and progress as a region.
Before installation, we completed a site survey and performed material testing to calculate dimensions and to determine which of our vinyl products would best adhere to the walls. We worked with the Pittsburgh Today designer to appropriately size their files. Then, after completing the vinyl testing, we determined that the 3M Envision vinyl and the corresponding laminate was best to place on the overhead concrete walls of the central shopping plaza because of its exceptional adhering ability. For the walls at the terminal gates, we chose our standard 3M Controltac because of its durability.
We began the installation once the final designs were approved and printed. The process started with us wiping all the concrete walls with rubbing alcohol to prepare the wall so the graphics would stick. We then placed each graphic to their designated location and applied heat over the vinyl to create a durable and long-lasting application. We were able to install four 9’X14’ wall graphics in the halls of the gates and four 4’X33’ graphics in the central shopping plaza. The finished product is eight vivid wall murals that promote Pittsburgh Today’s infographic message to the citizens and visitors of Pittsburgh.
